Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

A great place to visit is 2015 St. Patrick's Day Town... visit here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Elizabeth%20Town/128/128/2

This is a great explore for St. Patrick's Day. I visited with my friends Sonicity Fitzroy and Belinda Barnes and just turned the camera on a little when we danced a quick jig. There is a lot to see and play on and plenty to buy for décor, gifts, clothes, foods, and novelty items.

Gladys Knight and The Pips Cross Over Event

The Primier event has come and gone, but I have hopes there may be some follow up appearances!  This event was so much fun, well executed, and super special in that real life celebrities came into SL just for the event, and even talked and answered questions.  That's right, yesterday William Franklin Guest, one of The Pips of Gladys Knight and The Pips, and Lady Dhyana, Dr. Dame Dhyana Zeigler, co-authors of the book, "Midnight Train FROM Georgia" were in SL.  (see here: http://www.amazon.com/Midnight-Train-Georgia-Pips-Journey/dp/0828324697/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1384125882&sr=1-1&keywords=midnight+train+from+georgia )  See also following post for a great deal of information about the event.

My friend Sonicity Fitzroy is first life friends with Lady Dhyana and she put together this event together with her partner Belinda Barnes and Lowe Runo all of SoNice Productions, RingMyBel Productions, and Lowe Runo Productions.  On a personal note I was privileged to helped a little bit behind the scenes and got to be in Skype conversations with the guests of honor.  I was very impressed with their friendly, gracious and enthusiastic engagement with those of us in Skype regarding the production.  William was very congenial and they both very much enjoyed their avatars made for them by Sonicity and Belinda.  Soni and Bel also made the avatars for the tribute show following the talk by William and Lady Dhyana, that included Gladys and the Pips as seen in some of my photos.  I think they did an exceptional job making the avatars look like the actual people.  Lady Dhyana and Willam used the avatars made for them and handled them very well considered they have just been in SL for a couple of days and they have taken over their avatars now,  so maybe they will be around SL again in the future.  The show Pips and Gladys avatars are maintained by the companies presenting the show, but the group/band was set up and run for the tribute concert by Definitive Rock Concerts.  Miles 11thHour DJ'd leading into the event.
pips3.jpg by Kara 2

William and Lady Dhyana spoke on voice for about 30 minutes about their experiences with the group giving some family background history, and information about record lables and their travels and experiences.  William's smooth voice and clear story/memory telling led for a exciting, interesting event.   Lady Dhyana's energy, enthusiasm, and personal life involvement seems to tie the whole of the family memories together for the book.  I was privy to a little extra information since I was on Skype with the production group during the event and learned that Lady Dhyana and William had done 3 prior interviews (first life) earlier in the day already Saturday prior to this SL event.  I also learned that they both really enjoyed seeing and being the avatars and felt they were very well made and good likenesses of them.  William obviously is a little older in first life and they commented how much his avatar looked like him and looks like one of their relatives now in first life.  They had some family member gathered around them watching their computers as they gave their SL talk and they were all enjoying Second Life and the crowd, band, and looks of the avatars.  It was also fun to see them enjoying the crowd and dancing in Second Life to the tunes of Gladys Knight and The Pips.

pips12.jpg by Kara 2

An interesting thought about this presentation is that a first life historical celebrity was present to talk about his history in show business and all the public presence and yesterday was able to see the future in one way media also can present his story to people around the world via an avatar and virtual world.  Can you imagine how that must feel?

Visit here to see Soni's Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/simplysoni/

My friends Sonicity Fitzroy (RL and SL published author) and Belinda Barnes have served up their 2nd children's (think everyone) book on issuu, made in Second Life.  This time Soni wrote a cute children's story just in time for Halloween which makes for a nice gift to us all from them.  This story has a fun unexpected ending but I won't give a spoiler, so you will have a look for yourself.  Take the top link above to read it all for yourself, and maybe you will recognize some of the SL places the scenes are set in. Thanks Soni and Bel.

Very Blurred Lines Styled

Late Night Twerksters a video by Kara Trapdoor on Flickr.

I'm reposting the Blurred video with style info. as some people were asking where we got the goods.  The whole deal was spur of the moment and we were all goofy tired, but was very much a join effort.  Here you go:

Sim, shopping and explore--I was showing off to Bel this impressive sim, Deathrow Island (home to the awesome Deathrow products plus an amazing explore): Visit here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Death%20Row/128/128/72

Outfit--There was a variety of other little shops in the explore area and then we spotted the outfit, "The BAD SHOW Body Suit"  by DRBC which can be found here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Death%20Row/128/128/72

Then Soni came in and we all decided we must dress like Miley and do the twerk dance.

Dance--Some time back I was talking to Bel about all the twerking and we bought the dance and she put hers into her huddles for us all to use.  We got it at A and M Mocap Danceworks here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Mocap%20Dancer/128/128/5

Hair--Soni found the hair, Chemistry "Buttons" at SL Marketplace here: https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Chemistry-HAIR-Buttons-Blonds/4452229

Foam Finger--I found the mesh Miley finger by SWaGGa on marketplace here: https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/SWaGGa-MESH-Miley-Finger-Wearable-with-10-Animations/5247881

Mic/props--We all used our own hair bows, tennis, and mics, but I used a mic prop by my friend Franklyn which can be purchased for only $5 L on Marketplace here: https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Microphone-singing/3324801

Tongue--Then Soni and Bel said they already had the TA sculpt animated tongue so they showed me where to get it on Marketplace here: https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/TA-Sculpt-Animated-Tongue/1497013

More video--We all went over to Bel's World where Bel stretched a bear and I colored some prim backgrounds and Bel cranked up her huddles while Soni and I both filmed.  Soni also got some of the outtake snaps I added to mine. You can also see Soni's version on here Flickr here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/simplysoni/9673321152/

And of course thanks to Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke for the music and inspiration. : )

The full press release reads:
"Welcome to our OPEN HOUSE celebration for your first peek into our sim.

The Sonic Lab and Machinima World at Virlantis (Second Life)

The Southern Illinois University-University of Western Australia virtual worlds project at Virlantis, Second Life  is an educational themed experiment in the creation of sound and animation content, with its long-term goal being the development of machinima and online media that serves at-risk learning communities.

The immediate goal for this summer was to create an immersive environment - the Sonic Lab - for teaching sound online historically and culturally as art and practice.   For that purpose, a multi-layer sound lab was constructed to help students develop critical listening skills, by virtually tuning into the modern origins of music and learning to appreciate the sonic environment, now and then, that contributes to our daily soundscapes.  The virtual classroom experience leads students through time, place - and sound. The Sonic Lab connects students to the sounds of the past, present and future. They enter the virtual world via a medieval realm soaked with layered sounds ignited by one's presence and touch. Visitors acoustically engage into a soundscape rich with nature's lush greens and harbor sounds, and perhaps stop into the local tavern for a chat and music. Their travels take them to modern times, from Ragtime's Scott Joplin, to experimental masters Edgard Varèse and John Cage, to those they have influenced, Reich, Zappa, The Beatles, Hendrix, Ramones, Riot Grrrls, and New York's alternative scene. The sound installation was funded by a course development grant awarded by SIUC's Distance Education program for Summer 2013.

Beginning August 2013, Southern Illinois University (in partnership with the University of Western Australia) launches phase two of its larger plan in the development of virtual media studies and production.  Machinima World is a three year experiment in the design of an open-ended, accessible and collaborative animation platform that focuses on outcome based learning for at-risk communities.  Part of the process involves assisting educators with some production basics: character and story/curriculum development, original sound composition, set construction, to motion capture animation that can be imported and exported between virtual platforms.   The idea is to help educators participate and lead in the virtual media making process and develop creative and relevant animation (and mixed reality) content targeting youth from communities that lack resources and skills.  Of course, whenever possible, the target audience will participate in content development and production.   Ultimately, educators (and students) would be encouraged to contribute machinima and other virtual media forms to an archival web site of shared content, techniques, and program reviews.  A pilot series will be created to demonstrate the process.   Themes addressed include social justice, collaboration, diversity representation in all its forms, and science/technology.

The goal is to open up the diversity of voices, from all locales, from South Chicago to South India to Western Australia, and so forth. Critical are representation of characters/voices pertaining to gender, ethnicity, disability, and socio-economic level.

To learn about this project, attend the VWBPE Conference session, Sonic Immersion Part I:  Hearing is Believing, Case Study:  Sound Studies in Second Life, Southern Illinois. Friday, July 26, 8:05-8:55 AM SLT, Builder's Brewery Auditorium.  Part II will be held at Virlantis during VWBPE's MOOC post-conference, with times to be announced soon.   Admission is free.

Join us Saturday, July 20th, Noon to 2PM SLT for an Open House at Virlantis.
Visit the sim, spanning four levels and six regions, when we unearth the sonic mysteries of sound, as noise, music and art.

Contact Sonicity Fitzroy for more information, sonicityfitzroy@yahoo.com.
Dr. Phylis Johnson (SL, Sonicity Fitzroy) is professor of sound and new media at Southern Illinois University, and author of two books on virtual media.  Her work can be found on Amazon.com.   She would like to credit Belinda Barnes, Lowe Runo and Kara Trapdoor, as well as Jay Jay Jegathesan (Jayjay Zifanwe) of UWA for their support and assistance on this project.

Phideaux put together this impressive monthly magazine for 5 years featuring much of the best SL has to offer in all things retro and has had a wide readership with some very qualified journalists and photographers. Huge kudos to Phi! It is informative and entertaining and it's sad to see it come to an end for now, but it's understandable Phi may need a break from this ongoing commitment.  Phi is a busy person in SL and continues with her music career.  She can often be heard singing around the grid and regularly at Flashman's here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Insulae%20Esoterica/128/128/22
You can check also check out Phi's singing at the Trax listening center and her booth is toward the ocean side entry, Trax is also a very cool to place to visit to hear all your favorite SL musicians in one place.  Visit here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Trax/128/128/27

One of my favorite features in the Retropolitan magazine is one I've blogged here before: "The Adventures of Bel and Soni: Unleashed Dreams, A Steampunk Tale of Untimely Significance".   My friend Sonicity Fitzroy who writes for Retropolitan Magazine in SL began writing a serial drama last February 2012 as an exclusive to Retropolitan with all rights reserved to Sonicity Fitzroy and Lowe Runo Productions.   Each month since then a new chapter has graced the pages of the magazine.  The two heroines are growing up much faster than is natural by crossing over into the as yet mysterious realm 13.  This creative and exciting story has fresh twists and turns each week with past steampunk, present, and futuristic aspects all woven in.  Soni is a RL published author taking her writing skills to a different level with this fiction chapter story.  Belinda provides many of the photos to compliment this great team effort between the SL partners.  In their closing chapter with their thanks to The Retropolitan magazine, they expressed plans to continue the story with a published book including some of the story that has graced the pages of Retropolitan and continuing with their conclusion around the end of this year.
Retropolitan_002 by Kara 2
The magazine carried regular advertisements, featured some great articles on various topics from retro hair in SL to impressive sims, stores, persons, and included humor, stories, and so much more.
Another interesting fact, at least to me, is that I can proudly say I guest wrote a few articles in the past for Retroopolitan.  It's sad to see it come to a close, but will be a great memory of a outstanding and well read and respected SL production.  Be sure to take the links and check it out of you have not had the opportunity yet.  The content will always be worthy of review.  Thank you Phideaux!

Tonight there was a fun James Bond event at The Mercury Room.  Soni and Bel were all decked out in James Bond attire and tp'd myself and my buddy, Lowe Runo in to check it out.  The place was looking great with a helicopter up front, briefcases with guns being  passed around, shark swimming around under the dance floor, and there was some great Bondish attire all around.  The music was from the many movies and we all had a fun time.  I made a little video of Mr. Runo and myself dancing... be sure to watch the whole thing and keep your eyes on my bu..... err... his hands.

Last night I visited the beautiful sim, "It All Starts With A Smile" on Onyx Isle, with a friend and had a little time to look around, then revisited with another friend, Belinda Barnes today.  We noticed sim owner Kaelyn Alecto and I spoke with her a bit about the sim, since I fell in love with it right away.  Sadly, she advised me that she is closing the sim this Wednesday, May 15, due to tier costs.  I'm happy to have had a chance to visit though and she said I could blog it so others can visit before it closes.  Upon landing I was in a small village-looking area with a fun pose carousal and ferris wheel on the board walk and a cute coffee shop and other stores, but over the back hill I found a beautiful haven of flower fields, cute and beautiful pose spots all over in the form of a piano plateau, car with  mini camper poser, tree house, fairy ring, ruins, and so much more.  Bel and I found a nice cabin to explore and pose in and around yet another bend I found a beach area with even more beautiful photo ops and poses.  It's very much worth the rush and visit over there before it closes.  The Huge lettering on the hill says it all, "Smile"... and you will.

Holiday Dreams Gallery Opening Soon

I'm working on a new project and it's a beautiful full mesh building that I am making into a gallery for the holidays. Opening date and SLurl to be announced, but I just had to do a little pre-opening blog post.   I'm very unorganized and don't even have a opening date scheduled yet, but it will be soon.  The artists have been amazing and the place is looking great if I do say so myself.
gallerycollege by Kara 2

But delays come in all forms and my first was when I somehow rezzed 3 copies of the build on top of each other and didn't notice it until later when there were returning multiple doors in doorways and the front foundation had a giff like wiggle effect going on.  The deleting and re-rezzing was tedious but I'm sure there is a better way than this permanoob is aware of.   Next I was messing with scripts and somehow magically threw a landmark giver hover text script right into the front stairs unbeknownst to me.  For the life of me I couldn't see it in contents to get ride of it, so in came Bel the Builder to the rescue.  Belinda Barnes is quite handy and she arrived all decked out ready to work.  In short time she had the place fixed up and when I had to go real life and told her my vision for one of the rooms, I returned a couple hours later only to find Bel had fixed up the room exactly how I wanted.  I took a few pics of her since she was perfect for the job.

Anyway.. I'll keep you posted on the gallery opening, but here is a sneak peek look at it and Bel on the job!  More to come.....

Happy International Women's Day-Be a Role Model

'Just taking a moment to observe International Women's Day today March 8th. "International Women's Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women’s Day, is marked on March 8 every year. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women's economic, political and social achievements. Started as a Socialist political event, the holiday blended in the culture of many countries, primarily Eastern Europe, Russia, and the former Soviet bloc. In many regions, the day lost its political flavour, and became simply an occasion for men to express their love for women in a way somewhat similar to a mixture of Mother's Day and Valentine's Day. In other regions, however, the original political and human rights theme designated by the United Nations runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner." Wiki
Bel

My SL friend Belinda Barnes depicts it well in this SL photo she made tailored after the retro Rosie the Riveter wartime poster "We Can Do It" motivational posters representing women left home behind while their men were off at war, having to mange without spouses, often working very hard to make ends meet. Per Wiki,"Rosie the Riveter is a cultural icon of the United States, representing the American women who worked in factories during World War II, many of whom produced munitions and war supplies. These women sometimes took entirely new jobs replacing the male workers who were in the military. Rosie the Riveter is commonly used as a symbol of feminism and women's economic power."

Take advantage of many group gifts and freebies around SL today in honor of this special day. It's a good day for ladies to try to remember to be good role models and for everyone to remember the special ladies in their lives.

FINALLY

Kara Trapdoor and I tried for hours to rez details around the face, breasts and er... other areas.

Turns out you MUST to go to the "DEVELOP" menu in your viewer and then go to "RENDER/Full Res Textures". On the older 1.23 Viewers it's ADVANCED/DEBUG/TextureLoadFullRes. BEWARE some computers may not handle this level of rendering and will crash.

I spoke with the maker Horo Kral and he says he will add this information to the avatar instructions.

He also informed me that as the Lindens develop viewers that support mesh facial animation he will add this feature in upcoming versions. He also assures me sexier and more varied clothing will be available soon.

My opinion at this time is that it's cool to try and see, but personally for daily wear I'll wait a while until it's a little more advanced and there is a bit more variety. Bel likes to try new things and is cutting edge, as am I usually. I have to say I am thrilled with the feet!

"A Steampunk Christmas" The Adventures of Bel and Soni-Adorable Book Made in SL

A Steampunk Christmas
(book cover texture courtesy of Sonicity Fitzroy)

My friend Sonicity Fitzroy is at it again and this time the RL published author has made a SL children's book called, "A Steampunk Christmas" The Adventures of Bel and Soni. The story is a whimsical steampunk adventure of 2 young girls with very different personalities, their curious cat, and a runaway Christmas present. Their pursuit of the enchanted gift leads them on their adventure and full circle back home in time for Christmas day. The vibrant colors, and adorable steampunk styling lends to beautiful illustrations complimenting this enjoyable Christmas story.

Soni is giving away her book for free just in time for Christmas. I think they'd make great Christmas gifts and I'm not just saying that because my avatar plays the role of the mischievous cat. The books can be found in kiosks at Lowe Runo Productions Office and A Flicker in Time Art Gallery.
