Want to hear some great live music? Check this out.
(I popped in to grab the SLurl for my blog and caught GraveyJones, Luis Lockjaw, and Long Pausch setting up)
I previously heard Luvsong and Gravy when Luvsong sang at the Trap Club which I posted here: http://karasecondlife.blogspot.com/2013/05/luvsong-writer-at-trap-club-5-2-13.html. These guys can really sing. I stood around while they were finalizing things for this event, so had a chance to ask a few questions. They said it would be cool if people came in masquerade style dress with masks, but they also want people to come in whatever they are comfortable with. It sounded like they were planning a prize for best mask and some fun things too though. The venue looks great and I'm looking forward to it.

My Date with Flat Rodvik Linden
I went out on a little mini-vaca RL and came back to see Berry's Flat Rodvik Monday Meme. See here: http://strawberrysingh.com/
This is right up my alley. I have done the Flat Stanley in RL and actually sent out a whole laminated family of 4 in different directions 2 of which traveled the world, one stayed within the states and the 4th, bless his paper heart, never returned home. I have some cool photos and stories out of that little experiment. If you are not familiar with the Flat Stanley story and didn't read Berry's blog, it's basically a kids book of a flat boy that easily travels around, since he is flat, and has adventures, and often school classes or individuals do something similar and send out a flat likeness/think paper doll, to go from friend to relative or just with someone as they travel and they take pics of this flat paper doll on their travels, often in front of historical landmarks, with groups of people, and doing fun things with their travel companions.
Berry's meme this week is to take her flat Rodvik Linden (free on SL Marketplace here: https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Flat-Rodvik-Linden/5142523) around and show him a good time in SL and blog about the experience. I decided to make a date of it, since I don't have a SL boyfriend or travel companion really, and Rodvik seemed to be the perfect opportunity to blog about my "perfect date" in SL. Berry took him out on the town, so why shouldn't I? He is very agreeable and doesn't talk too much. He went right along wherever I wanted him to go. He didn't complain about anything at all.
I like to be a little active and play games etc. I couldnt' find anyone playing SLictionay which is one of my fav SL games I bought on Marketplace and sometimes give as gifts (here: https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/BB-Black-Board-with-SLictionary-Game/2061124 )
so, instead for our first stop I took him bowling. I enjoy a fun opening to an evening and it's great to see how competitive a person is. We went over to Paradox Bowling: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Mournful/128/128/37 for a quick game. I was a little disappointed he wasn't up for keeping score. And while I'm great at carrying on a conversation for hours, he was a little quiet for me, and I didnt' get to know much about him at all, except that he could use a new outfit for his birthday or some occasion. His rez day is Jan 11th, just for the record. So my warm up activity maybe didn't suit him.
We tried out some paintball in the cool explore in Stacatto, but again, Rodvik just could not run fast enough to suit me, maybe he just wanted some quality time with me, but he was hard to read : http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Staccato/128/128/22
I like to move along in SL so we teleported over to some live music over at The Roof. Noma was singing with Vincent playing and there were literally 81 avatars present plus Rod who didn't count. hehe. Ling always has a large crowd for live music Mondays and Wednesdays. I really just wanted to dance, but again, Rodvik must be taken or gay, because no matter what I tried I just could not catch his eye. He did loyally stand by me all night though. The Roof here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife//172/167/50
I wanted to go out formal dancing but gave up on that though since Rod seemed pretty tired and wasn't moving too much other than when I moved.
Then I thought perhaps I'd take him out exploring a little. I figured maybe he's not a talker and just wanted to relax. I heard the 13 Calas Galadhon sims are all closing August 1st, probably/hopefully reopening in early September, but I heard they will be losing at least four permanently: Bay of Balfalas, Belegaer, Sea of Nurnen and Eryn Vorn. So we went over there: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Mirromere/128/128/32. The music and scenery was so lovely If you want more info. about the closure and issues you can read more about it here: http://calasgaladhon.com/
Finally I took Rod home to show him my house, and I hoped for a cuddle in the hammock or something, but still he resisted, so I gave him a house tour. Not actually the best date ever after all. I tried.
And finally... something weird happened. There is a tiny chance I did get him wet in the pool and fed him a snack after midnight. I lost track of time. Sorry Berry. Time to sleep. Or maybe I already was dreaming.

Food Fair 2013, July 19-28
Visit here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/The%20Citadel/128/128/2
The first annual SL Food Fair began 7-19-13 and runs through July 28th. This is a fair dedicated to the love of food. For their official blog and list of designers/participants see here: http://officialfoodfair.wordpress.com/
Above I'm wearing my new food fair watermelon and cupcake dress, watermelon in mouth, strawberry necklace, sitting in one of the floatys in the lake in the middle of the food fair, surrounded by the street shops and street vendors filled with all things food related from the fun novelty, to clothes, poses, home decor, food products, etc. all in all a fun explore. I invited a friend who asked me why I'd want to visit this, to which I considered, "all the food and none of the calories?" And she added, "And none of the flavor". I guess it's like a bit like a tease to her, BUT, the place and products are super super cute and really is a fun visit as you can see by the photos. Be sure to check it out.

"Welcome to our OPEN HOUSE celebration for your first peek into our sim.
The Sonic Lab and Machinima World at Virlantis (Second Life)
The Southern Illinois University-University of Western Australia virtual worlds project at Virlantis, Second Life is an educational themed experiment in the creation of sound and animation content, with its long-term goal being the development of machinima and online media that serves at-risk learning communities.
The immediate goal for this summer was to create an immersive environment - the Sonic Lab - for teaching sound online historically and culturally as art and practice. For that purpose, a multi-layer sound lab was constructed to help students develop critical listening skills, by virtually tuning into the modern origins of music and learning to appreciate the sonic environment, now and then, that contributes to our daily soundscapes. The virtual classroom experience leads students through time, place - and sound. The Sonic Lab connects students to the sounds of the past, present and future. They enter the virtual world via a medieval realm soaked with layered sounds ignited by one's presence and touch. Visitors acoustically engage into a soundscape rich with nature's lush greens and harbor sounds, and perhaps stop into the local tavern for a chat and music. Their travels take them to modern times, from Ragtime's Scott Joplin, to experimental masters Edgard Varèse and John Cage, to those they have influenced, Reich, Zappa, The Beatles, Hendrix, Ramones, Riot Grrrls, and New York's alternative scene. The sound installation was funded by a course development grant awarded by SIUC's Distance Education program for Summer 2013.
Beginning August 2013, Southern Illinois University (in partnership with the University of Western Australia) launches phase two of its larger plan in the development of virtual media studies and production. Machinima World is a three year experiment in the design of an open-ended, accessible and collaborative animation platform that focuses on outcome based learning for at-risk communities. Part of the process involves assisting educators with some production basics: character and story/curriculum development, original sound composition, set construction, to motion capture animation that can be imported and exported between virtual platforms. The idea is to help educators participate and lead in the virtual media making process and develop creative and relevant animation (and mixed reality) content targeting youth from communities that lack resources and skills. Of course, whenever possible, the target audience will participate in content development and production. Ultimately, educators (and students) would be encouraged to contribute machinima and other virtual media forms to an archival web site of shared content, techniques, and program reviews. A pilot series will be created to demonstrate the process. Themes addressed include social justice, collaboration, diversity representation in all its forms, and science/technology.
The goal is to open up the diversity of voices, from all locales, from South Chicago to South India to Western Australia, and so forth. Critical are representation of characters/voices pertaining to gender, ethnicity, disability, and socio-economic level.
To learn about this project, attend the VWBPE Conference session, Sonic Immersion Part I: Hearing is Believing, Case Study: Sound Studies in Second Life, Southern Illinois. Friday, July 26, 8:05-8:55 AM SLT, Builder's Brewery Auditorium. Part II will be held at Virlantis during VWBPE's MOOC post-conference, with times to be announced soon. Admission is free.
Join us Saturday, July 20th, Noon to 2PM SLT for an Open House at Virlantis.
Visit the sim, spanning four levels and six regions, when we unearth the sonic mysteries of sound, as noise, music and art.
Contact Sonicity Fitzroy for more information, sonicityfitzroy@yahoo.com.
Dr. Phylis Johnson (SL, Sonicity Fitzroy) is professor of sound and new media at Southern Illinois University, and author of two books on virtual media. Her work can be found on Amazon.com. She would like to credit Belinda Barnes, Lowe Runo and Kara Trapdoor, as well as Jay Jay Jegathesan (Jayjay Zifanwe) of UWA for their support and assistance on this project.

Visit here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Chouchou%20XVI/128/128/2
Chouchou has been around for long time with a break for a while and is associated with music by the group of the same name. I've been back visiting this watery land known for the many pics on the main ground Chouchou level by the piano next to the tree and later in the Memento mori cathedral, but either I'd forgotten or missed the sound squares the lead up the tower of Babel. Clicking the squares and objects project piano and voice sung notes and percussion sounds. Other sections are Islmaey Garden in the sky, Chouchou's live music venue, and the music store where you can buy Chouchou's music. You can even get a free hud to view the sim in a different way. This is a great explore and sound area and a must see.

(Archivist Llewellyn)
Archivist showed me the museum and said when people visit the build area they can get a free space suit to wear like the one on display here in the above picture from the museum. When you touch the gloves of the suit it has recording from the mission. There are also recordings from the actual sputnik if you touch it. There is information that tells the story of Apollo 11 from planning to launch, to landing on the moon, to doing science experiments on the moon, planting the flag and talking to President Nixon, to landing in the water, to the NYC ticker tape parade. She added that she's going to be at the Armstrong Museum in RL during the celebration weekend, giving a talk on Curiosity Rover and Mars exploration.
This is an informative and interesting area worthy of a visit and don't forget the contest and events Saturday!

Retropolitan Magazine's Final Print Issue July, 2013 in Second Life After an Impressive 5 Year Run
The final chapters have been written with the July issues of Retropolitan Magazine in Second Life.

Retropolitan 2008-2013 - THE monthly place to find your Retro Style, beyond the usual worldview., founded by Phideaux Mayo
Follow online at www.retropolitan.org
Fashion, Lifestyle, Menswear, Locales, More.
Featuring some of the best of SL from the 1920's, 30's , 40's thru the 70's.
Phideaux put together this impressive monthly magazine for 5 years featuring much of the best SL has to offer in all things retro and has had a wide readership with some very qualified journalists and photographers. Huge kudos to Phi! It is informative and entertaining and it's sad to see it come to an end for now, but it's understandable Phi may need a break from this ongoing commitment. Phi is a busy person in SL and continues with her music career. She can often be heard singing around the grid and regularly at Flashman's here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Insulae%20Esoterica/128/128/22
You can check also check out Phi's singing at the Trax listening center and her booth is toward the ocean side entry, Trax is also a very cool to place to visit to hear all your favorite SL musicians in one place. Visit here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Trax/128/128/27
One of my favorite features in the Retropolitan magazine is one I've blogged here before: "The Adventures of Bel and Soni: Unleashed Dreams, A Steampunk Tale of Untimely Significance". My friend Sonicity Fitzroy who writes for Retropolitan Magazine in SL began writing a serial drama last February 2012 as an exclusive to Retropolitan with all rights reserved to Sonicity Fitzroy and Lowe Runo Productions. Each month since then a new chapter has graced the pages of the magazine. The two heroines are growing up much faster than is natural by crossing over into the as yet mysterious realm 13. This creative and exciting story has fresh twists and turns each week with past steampunk, present, and futuristic aspects all woven in. Soni is a RL published author taking her writing skills to a different level with this fiction chapter story. Belinda provides many of the photos to compliment this great team effort between the SL partners. In their closing chapter with their thanks to The Retropolitan magazine, they expressed plans to continue the story with a published book including some of the story that has graced the pages of Retropolitan and continuing with their conclusion around the end of this year.
The magazine carried regular advertisements, featured some great articles on various topics from retro hair in SL to impressive sims, stores, persons, and included humor, stories, and so much more.
Another interesting fact, at least to me, is that I can proudly say I guest wrote a few articles in the past for Retroopolitan. It's sad to see it come to a close, but will be a great memory of a outstanding and well read and respected SL production. Be sure to take the links and check it out of you have not had the opportunity yet. The content will always be worthy of review. Thank you Phideaux!
