Fashion for Life
FFL this year has a "wanderlust" theme with sims called Amble, Excursion, Journey, Meander, Parade, Preambulate, Prominade, Trek, Voyage, and Wander.   I visited today and found it easy to get in and maneuver.  I picked up a free "passport" at one of the 10 sim redemption centers and read about getting the passport "stamped" with a 50L relay for life souvenir purchased in each of the 10 sims for the option to redeem for one of the redemption center items.

While traveling I found a huge airport, balloon area, space/scifi, Victorian/steampunk, huge airport, the RFL volunteer center and celebration stage area, many pretty park like areas, boardwalk seaside area, route 66 hometown, etc. etc. FFL has events and DJ's lined up for entertainment too.  I have to say, I enjoy these events as much for the builds and scenery as I do for the shopping and fundraiser.  Perambulate was especially beautiful and Amble was also super cool,  but they were all impressive in their unique ways. Be sure to visit for whatever reason, and remember the sales are for a good cause.

2011 Relay For Life Kickoff in SL -10amSLT Today 3-12-11

Last year March 22 I began this blog with a post about the final SL Relay for Life Event of 2010 supporting the American Cancer Society. Many designers, sims, individuals, musicians, etc. will offer their talents toward these events and some of the annual fun events I especially like that will participate include:

fashion for life
Some of the features this weeks Fashion for Life, formerly called the Fashion Fair, come from some of my favorite designers including Evie's Closet, Nicky Ree, LeeZu, and SySy. I received a press release on this event and it in part states:

"Fashion for Life is SL’s longest-running and most successful fashion fair. All donations go to SL Relay for Life, benefiting the American Cancer Society.

Running March 12-22 across 9 sims, this year’s theme will be “Beyond Black and White,” embodying the spirit of cancer survivors everywhere as they find hope rising out of the dark diagnosis of cancer. Spread over the sims will be over 180 stores with a hunt and gotcha areas, all with the goal of raising funds for the American Cancer Society. Fashion for Life will feature the best designers from around the globe.

Over 1,100,000L has already been raised via sponsorships and store registration. With nine sim sponsors including KMadd, SLink, House of RFyre, Nicky Ree, Bliss Couture, Evie's Closet, Falln Angels, Lapointe & Bastchild, and Woe, we expect this to be the biggest so far, with donated funds going to the American Cancer Society via their RFL program in SL.

MUCH information is available at the website, http://fashionforlifesl.com

Nevertheless, let us tell you a little more:

* What is the point of Fashion for Life? What is your mission?
Simply put, our mission is to maximize donations to the American Cancer Society via the SL Relay for Life while creating a great sales environment for in-world avatar content (including lowered lag and great entertainment). Our goal is provide complete transparency in financial and operational actions to all residents. And to have fun doing this!

* Who is the money going to? What are you getting out of this?
Finally, and most importantly, efforts and funds committed to FFL go to support American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. We are entirely volunteer driven and 100% of the funds raised are presented as a charitable donation to ACS from the residents of Second Life. We are doing this out of the love in our hearts--really. If you require any documentation to this effect, please contact Harper Beresford.

* How can people keep an eye on how you're doing?
A running total will be shown on our webpage so we can keep track to the minute how we are doing!

* What is the theme? What does it mean?
The theme of Fashion for Life this year is “Beyond Black and White.” Instead of doing themes that were based on locales or one monolithic theme, we came upon the idea of making the sims in black and white—like a black and white photo. We felt that this would reinforce how cancer is no longer a black and white diagnosis because of the work of the American Cancer Society. They provide funds, programs and support that takes cancer “beyond black and white.” Designers and builders were given this theme and encouraged to interpret it as they pleased.

* Why are the sims named as they are?
We decided to name the sims after reknowned black and white photographers. In fact, two of the photographers tie into one of our VIP Sponsors. A long explanation about the photographers chosen can be found here: http://fashionforlifesl.com/2011/02/arcspace-com-at-fashion-for-life/

* What were the designer requirements?
In short, each designer donated money to have a store on the sims and committed to donate four items whose income goes to the American Cancer Society 100%. VIP Sponsors made higher donations and Sim Sponsors made substantially larger donations. More information can be found on the website at http://fashionforlifesl.com/designer-information/sponsorship-levels/ and http://fashionforlifesl.com/designer-information/terms/.
fashion for life floorplan
* Who is participating?
You can find information on the vendors at Fashion for Life here:
http://fashionforlifesl.com/forpatrons/vendor-listing/

* What's going on with the hunt?
The hunt will feature items priced 10-100L and hidden in the shops of participating designers. All proceeds from the hunt items will go to the American Cancer Society. You can find more about the shops on our website at http://fashionforlifesl.com/forpatrons/hunt-slurls-and-hints/

* And what's with the gacha?
The gacha is a new thing this year. For anyone who doesn't know what a gacha is, it is a vendor that randomly offers one of the items in its inventory when paid--kind of like a bubble gum machine. Many of the designers opted to participate in the gacha this year, offering 6 items per vendor, all no copy/transfer so people can trade and share. Each sim will have a gacha area with gachas that were created to match the theme of the sim. All proceeds from the gachas will go to the American Cancer Society. You can find a list of participating vendors at

* What are you guys doing about lag?
We are keenly aware of the issues of lag and will be doing *everything* on our end to mitigate it, including monitoring scripts on the sims, watching our texture and sculpty use, and restarting the sims at 10 am slt every day. We have also issued a blog about lag right before the fair to remind people about proper sim visits. Please link back to this and remind people lag is often client-side.

* How is this different from the RFL Clothing Fair?
Fashion for Life is the evolution of the RFL Clothing Fair, started by Nevar Lobo and Pips Fetid and run by Nevar and Amethyst Starostin. When Nevar and Amethyst stepped down, Harper Beresford and then Syngen Sohmers undertook to continue the tradition. This new fair includes not just clothing, but anything an avatar can wear such as skins, shoes, hair, and accessories. Operations were streamlined with most information provided on the webpage, fashionforlifesl.com. Registrations were done completely online. Now the American Cancer Society sponsors the sims so all monies go directly to them to offset those costs and to add to the general fund. Finally, the name change indicates how Fashion for Life is not a Relay for Life team effort (as it was in the past) but an entity separate from the RFL teams."

Relay For Life, Journey:24 hour event, walk and entertainment -Closing Ceremony July 17

More Birthdays

My RFL Linden Bear
Tomorrow Saturday July 17, 2010 is the big American Cancer Society's Relay for Life closing ceremony 24 hour event. Over 35 countries will come together in Second Life to raise money for this cause. There are many sims and the place is amazing with huge and beautiful builds, sites to see and entertainment along the walk route. This is an explorer's dream, as I saw an Alice in Wonderland area, More Birthday's area, many many other interesting sites, and heard there is a sim size maze. The 2010 Relay for Life of Second Life theme is
"Wishing on a Cure".

Today I took an early tour of the area and set a SLurl link in front of the spectacular BOSL Tower of Hope on the path. The main road is lined with donation luminaries that light up when a donation is made to each and a person can leave their name as the donor or set it with a memorial name. When a donation to the luminary is made it changes color and you also get a scripted color changing luminary to take home.

The named luminaries

BOSL Tower of Hope

Frolic Mills & Others Tell "Why I Relay"

Check it out here: RFLHere.
The magnificent glowing BOSL Tower of Hope structure is best seen in dark light like midnight setting and is filled with plaques by designers who were involved in Relay for Life with their picture and statement of why they relay. There is even cool stuff under the water so don't miss the "eyeball" LOL! There is a gondola tour ride through the Tower of Hope.

Next door to BOSL is a treet.tv booth which offers some additional information about the day's events, Relay for Life in SL and the live musician's schedule. Among other things, you can get a free "walk and talk" line where you can walk hands free to chat in a Congo type line with friends.

There are 3 stages set up for entertainment during breaks from the walk.

(see also my first and subsequent blog posts regarding some SL involvement I attended)
What is Relay for Life of Second Life?
Relay for Life of Second Life is held on its own set of sims in July, and highly publicized throughout Second Life. Fundraising begins early in March, and continues through the Relay event in July and into August. On July 17th, the teams meet on a track where each team has a campsite they have decorated themselves, most according to a theme of their own choosing. Relayers walk around the track all night to symbolize that the fight against cancer never sleeps. The Relay for Life of Second Life includes a number of music events, and an all-night radio broadcast that can be heard all around the track."
