Zed-Wide World Paradise, Dali inspired

This is a totally cool sim. check it out here: http://slurl.com/secondlife/WideWorld%20Paradise/183/157/22 direct link here: ZedHere.
Wideworld Paradise Zed

The note card says: "Welcome to ZED, a surrealist experience!

The design of this sim was inspired in great part by the artwork of several well-known surrealist painters, mainly René Magritte and Salvador Dali, and on some designs by the famous Spanish architect Antonio Gaudi. Many of the 3D scenes you will see are my own 3D renditions of their paintings ; others are my own creations. In the Sky Gallery (􀂑 ) you will see the paintings that inspired my work.

Feel free to fly and explore. You can use the large Teleport Board at the landing point to visit different areas. There are also secret places that are not accessible via this large board. The more adventurous will have fun finding them on their own. You can also use the special doors to get to those secret places.

ZED is dedicated to romance and art in a surrealist, poetic ambiance. There are many places for chatting and dancing with your partner or friends. Some are designed for small groups, others for couples. There are also two places dedicated to group tai chi.
Do not hesitate to left- or right-click some objects, this is how you can find those TPs that lead t secret places ;-)

Occasionally we will have parties with some of the best DJs in SL playing great Techno and House music at Club Zed."

The info. on site states:
"The show Visualizing Theorem features sixteen installations which are based on the science and math theories explored in the album Theorem produced by Ulf Skogsbergh. The album Theorem is a result of an online collaboration between ten musicians on Indaba Music.

In the exhibit 16 art works are presented ranging from performance, to detailed steam punk style machines, interactive work, and minimal conceptual work. Each of the contributing artists selected a track from the album Theorem to work from as their inspiration. The theories range from spacetime, to special relativity, to genetic theory as well as some philosophy and computer programming ideas.

The visitors can view the art and also play the related music or soundscapes in world while hopping site to site through the fully functioning university sim of UTSA.

BE SURE TO CLICK STUFF
The installations at Split Screen during April are:

Maya Paris, "Mind the Gap" and Oberon Onmura, "Second Pool"

Notecards with information about each build are available from the Split Screen kiosks.Be sure to visit both installations! They're on either side of the kiosk at the landing point. In addition, Split Screen continues to host Misprint Thursday's "Digital Glove," which won an astonishing four awards at the University of Western Australia's February contest.

"Second Pool"
"An installation by Oberon Onmura
I created this "Second Pool" in memory of Sabrinaa Nightfire, who asked me to do a piece for her show "Enter ..." at Caerleon about a year ago. That piece turned out to be a pool, as well, different in many regards, but similar as a place of contemplation and peace.

Click the blue cubes at the corners for a transporter orb to the bottom. Watch out for the swimming things. Even though they look fragile, and many of them die before reaching their goal of escaping the pool, they can give you a strong bump if they happen to touch you.

Thanks to Dividni Shostakovitch for commissioning this work at Split Screen Installation Space!

"MIND THE GAP"
Let's do this in the dark
Midnight is best + you'll need computer-sound ON + your animation over-ride (AO) OFF.
**There are 3 interactive levels. Take your Dandelion Crown when you hit the bottom.
*LEVEL 1- LONG DROP: Click the UP teleporter disc on the water, then peer through the clouds, and click a Ball and Chain.
*LEVEL 2- DANDELION RISE:
CLICK :The winged Dandelion
Another ball and chain will take you down
or....Walk on water until you hear a splash
*LEVEL 3- CORONATION POND:
Find your Dandelion Crown
Break the glass ( will cost you $0L for damages)
Wear it and BLOW
(The vegetation's worth a click too)

*As the world's media prepare to swivel their lenses away from the serious issues of the day, and focus them on an anachronistic royal-showbiz wedding.......

**LONG LIVE THE MAGNIFICENT COMMON WEED***
Please take your crown off when you go to Oberon's Pool, he'll have my guts for garters if we fill it up with fluff....and if you look hard you can find a way to tunnel through. Click twice.
A big thank you to Dividni Shostakovich for inviting us to show here this month. It's been fantastic and has improved my digging no end. Also to Oberon, who can turn a Maya-script into a thing of beauty.

Happy Birthday Blog!

blog birthday_001
March 22, 2010 I started Kara's Korner blog. It's just past midnight now so it's March 23rd 2011 and I didn't want to let the day pass without marking it some way on my blog. I've really enjoyed making this and saving my fun SL times here. I'd like to thank all my followers and anyone who reads this for all the encouragement. It's been a great way for me to save and share what I like and also to let some of my friends know how much I appreciate them too in this small way I am able. Happy birthday blog!

Ok, the doors opened at midnight and there I was with a LOT of other people, so sure my picture has a bit of gray in it, but I could still see enough to know there are plenty of bargains all for a great cause and after I took off some pretty primmy boots, things became much clearer. I found clothes, poses, jewlery, novelties, and various other items galore. Please note that 100% of all money raised will go to the charity Americares (http://www.americares.org/). Land was donated by Glam Affair and all volunteers are giving their time without charge. They welcome any and all participation and interest in this event - if you'd like to participate as a designer please go to - http://www.tinyurl.com/pacificfund

I was given the following information: This particular event runs March 16 through the 20th with music the 19th-20th at Gwampas and Mankind March 23rd. Stratus will be quadrupling any of his tips up to 250$ RL of his own money.

In less than one hour the front donation box read $27,782L donated! The second box there was at almost an additional 10,000L in the first hour! What a great bunch of people SL has, lets keep the donations flowing.

Machinima Book by SL Authors is At the Publishers!

The book is off to the publisher!

Well it's about time I get my friends back after a year of their hard work researching, interviewing many many machinimatographers (or is it machinimists? machinimisters?-not sure) and writing their book about machinima with a heavy focus on Second Life but including interviews and information from various other platforms such as World of Warcraft, The Sims and others.

Word Woman, Sonicity Fitzroy, and Machinima Man, Lowe Runo, (I swear I'm going to make them the super hero outfits to match my secret pet names for them some day), have completed their book which is out to the publisher and Soni has written about the book at their web site: Magnum, The Machinima Review, a monthly blog Soni does here: http://magnummachinima.blogspot.com/ and direct link here: MagnumHere.

I'll quote the blog here a little, but go and check it out for yourself......"many did contribute to the making of Modern Machinima: Aesthetics and Practice in Game and Virtual Film making. The manuscript now awaits the first round of review by the publishers and the process continues through the summer months, with a Fall 2011 release scheduled."

So, yeah.. Yay! They are done! Well... it seems their work is never done and I am very sure they are both on to other major projects even as I write this. Many SL avatars are mentioned in the book and I think it will be a fun read for a lot of people especially since we will recognize many of the key players who provided expert insight for their book. I sat in on one of their round table interviews and was a bit in awe of the experience and knowledge the group had. They did include amateurs as well as many professionals in their open discussion groups for a good variety of skill levels and insight. But the leg work was done by these two hard working individuals who have a end product they should be very proud of in RL and SL. Their individual experience and skills blend exceptionally well for a team that is very productive. Soni herself is a RL educator in the media field, is previously published, has a great deal of long term experience in RL/SL media and machinima and of course Lowe is the machinimaster with the amazing special effects and SL/RL photography and video skills and experience. Search my blog for past information on both of these two if interested.

If you really want to see these two in action check them out this Friday at 2 SLT when they present at the Virtual Worlds Best Practice in Education Conference in SL. I've previously blogged about this as well. They are both great speakers with a passion for teaching and assisting others in learning more about machinima. Check it out! O, btw, did I mention they are friends of mine? heheh : )

Ok, this was very cool and I played with something like it at SL Burning Life 2 years ago, but this one won't completely work with Phoenix viewer and so I had a fellow visitor put my name in the search box to pull up my Flickr pics that have been tagged with my name so that I could take pictures of my Flickr pictures floating around me. The idea is to search any word you like and then Flickr pics with that tagged name will pop up and surround you. This is a fun thing to see and try.. check it out!

While there blogging this I met one of the makers, Mencius Watts, who confirmed that at this time Phoenix does not support this project, but the pictures can still be viewed using Phoenix. I checked his profile for the following info. "http://idialab.org/projects/45

AM Radio also showed up so I took a few more pics : )

The mobile version will be available after an upcoming announcement. In that version visitors interact with any web enabled mobile device such as an iPhone or Android to control what appears in Second Life.

Media must be enabled. All sound faders should be up - especially voice

The sim note card in parts states:
"THE INSTITUTE FOR DIGITAL INTERMEDIA ARTS at Ball State University is a virtual design studio exploring the intersections between art, science and technology. Research projects investigate virtual reality, interactive installation, hybrid design, simulation and human computer interface. IDIA Lab is funded by Eli Lilly Endowment, Inc. Artists, designers, researchers, and students, engage with international partners through this project-based learning center investigating the forefront of discourse in emergent media design.

"Rebirth" Installation by Josina Burgess

Today I had a notice that Josina Burgess, D&B CARP Founder was presenting her "Rebirth" installation today only, then packing up in need of the prims for a new show preparation. Many of the regulars showed up to to ride in the "cocoons" to be "rebirthed", while others stood around on the floor chatting about this installation and each others past and present shows. Bolero music was playing in the background and I received permission to make this short video of the cool interactive and beautiful experience. It's a shame this installation was only up for a short time, but perhaps she will put it out somewhere again some time.

2011 Relay For Life Kickoff in SL -10amSLT Today 3-12-11

Last year March 22 I began this blog with a post about the final SL Relay for Life Event of 2010 supporting the American Cancer Society. Today marks the 2011 Relay for Life kickoff event being held in the new BOSL football stadium starting at 10am SLT with the tailgate party and the Kickoff at 11amSLT (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Park%20Circle/195/8/2026 direct link here: RFLBOSLHere. Many designers, sims, individuals, musicians, etc. will offer their talents toward these events and some of the annual fun events I especially like that will participate include:

- Fashion for Life March 12 through 22 Link: http://fashionforlifesl.com or direct link here FashionForLifeHere.
-Fantasy Faire on April 2-10. Link here: http://fantasyfairesl.wordpress.com or direct link: FantasyHere.

fashion for life
Some of the features this weeks Fashion for Life, formerly called the Fashion Fair, come from some of my favorite designers including Evie's Closet, Nicky Ree, LeeZu, and SySy. I received a press release on this event and it in part states:

"Fashion for Life is SL’s longest-running and most successful fashion fair. All donations go to SL Relay for Life, benefiting the American Cancer Society.

Running March 12-22 across 9 sims, this year’s theme will be “Beyond Black and White,” embodying the spirit of cancer survivors everywhere as they find hope rising out of the dark diagnosis of cancer. Spread over the sims will be over 180 stores with a hunt and gotcha areas, all with the goal of raising funds for the American Cancer Society. Fashion for Life will feature the best designers from around the globe.

Over 1,100,000L has already been raised via sponsorships and store registration. With nine sim sponsors including KMadd, SLink, House of RFyre, Nicky Ree, Bliss Couture, Evie's Closet, Falln Angels, Lapointe & Bastchild, and Woe, we expect this to be the biggest so far, with donated funds going to the American Cancer Society via their RFL program in SL.

MUCH information is available at the website, http://fashionforlifesl.com

Nevertheless, let us tell you a little more:

* What is the point of Fashion for Life? What is your mission?
Simply put, our mission is to maximize donations to the American Cancer Society via the SL Relay for Life while creating a great sales environment for in-world avatar content (including lowered lag and great entertainment). Our goal is provide complete transparency in financial and operational actions to all residents. And to have fun doing this!

* Who is the money going to? What are you getting out of this?
Finally, and most importantly, efforts and funds committed to FFL go to support American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. We are entirely volunteer driven and 100% of the funds raised are presented as a charitable donation to ACS from the residents of Second Life. We are doing this out of the love in our hearts--really. If you require any documentation to this effect, please contact Harper Beresford.

* How can people keep an eye on how you're doing?
A running total will be shown on our webpage so we can keep track to the minute how we are doing!

* What is the theme? What does it mean?
The theme of Fashion for Life this year is “Beyond Black and White.” Instead of doing themes that were based on locales or one monolithic theme, we came upon the idea of making the sims in black and white—like a black and white photo. We felt that this would reinforce how cancer is no longer a black and white diagnosis because of the work of the American Cancer Society. They provide funds, programs and support that takes cancer “beyond black and white.” Designers and builders were given this theme and encouraged to interpret it as they pleased.

* Why are the sims named as they are?
We decided to name the sims after reknowned black and white photographers. In fact, two of the photographers tie into one of our VIP Sponsors. A long explanation about the photographers chosen can be found here: http://fashionforlifesl.com/2011/02/arcspace-com-at-fashion-for-life/

* What were the designer requirements?
In short, each designer donated money to have a store on the sims and committed to donate four items whose income goes to the American Cancer Society 100%. VIP Sponsors made higher donations and Sim Sponsors made substantially larger donations. More information can be found on the website at http://fashionforlifesl.com/designer-information/sponsorship-levels/ and http://fashionforlifesl.com/designer-information/terms/.
fashion for life floorplan
* Who is participating?
You can find information on the vendors at Fashion for Life here:
http://fashionforlifesl.com/forpatrons/vendor-listing/

* What's going on with the hunt?
The hunt will feature items priced 10-100L and hidden in the shops of participating designers. All proceeds from the hunt items will go to the American Cancer Society. You can find more about the shops on our website at http://fashionforlifesl.com/forpatrons/hunt-slurls-and-hints/

* And what's with the gacha?
The gacha is a new thing this year. For anyone who doesn't know what a gacha is, it is a vendor that randomly offers one of the items in its inventory when paid--kind of like a bubble gum machine. Many of the designers opted to participate in the gacha this year, offering 6 items per vendor, all no copy/transfer so people can trade and share. Each sim will have a gacha area with gachas that were created to match the theme of the sim. All proceeds from the gachas will go to the American Cancer Society. You can find a list of participating vendors at

* What are you guys doing about lag?
We are keenly aware of the issues of lag and will be doing *everything* on our end to mitigate it, including monitoring scripts on the sims, watching our texture and sculpty use, and restarting the sims at 10 am slt every day. We have also issued a blog about lag right before the fair to remind people about proper sim visits. Please link back to this and remind people lag is often client-side.

* How is this different from the RFL Clothing Fair?
Fashion for Life is the evolution of the RFL Clothing Fair, started by Nevar Lobo and Pips Fetid and run by Nevar and Amethyst Starostin. When Nevar and Amethyst stepped down, Harper Beresford and then Syngen Sohmers undertook to continue the tradition. This new fair includes not just clothing, but anything an avatar can wear such as skins, shoes, hair, and accessories. Operations were streamlined with most information provided on the webpage, fashionforlifesl.com. Registrations were done completely online. Now the American Cancer Society sponsors the sims so all monies go directly to them to offset those costs and to add to the general fund. Finally, the name change indicates how Fashion for Life is not a Relay for Life team effort (as it was in the past) but an entity separate from the RFL teams."

Second Life Helps Japan & The Pacific Following the Earthquakes and Tsunami, And You Can Too!

Once again Second Life residents and staff are showing their support to others in need. Linden Labs is offering specially made Linden bears in support of Japan and the Pacific following the earthquakes & Tsunami. They have various prices and styles and I bought one as shown in the picture. I am also wearing a free Japan t-shirt I was given when I logged on today that states our thoughts are with them. You can show your support online via the bears in Marketplace here: https://marketplace.secondlife.com/products/search?search[category_id]=&search[maturity_level]=GMA&search[keywords]=relief+teddy+bear or direct link here: LindenReliefBearHere.

The site reads, "Our thoughts are with all of those who are suffering in the devastation caused by the earthquakes in Japan and the tsunami in the Pacific. We encourage all Second Life Residents to support the relief efforts however they can, and we would like to help.

We have created a couple of special Linden Bears (one sitting, one wearable) and set them for sale. We will donate all proceeds from sales of our bears to the Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief efforts of the American Red Cross.

Thank you for helping us to support the relief efforts!"

More Information about fund raising and support can be found here: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Featured-News/Support-the-Japan-Earthquake-amp-Pacific-Tsunami-Relief-with/bc-p/744061#M6270 Direct link here: SLTsunamiHere.

SL friend Patrick Thorkveld provided this link and info.: American Red Cross stands ready and willing to assist following a magnitude 8.9 earthquake in Japan and the resulting tsunami that affected other countries in the Pacific region. Anyone wishing to support those efforts should go to www.redcross.org and donate to Japan and Pacific Tsunami. People can also donate $10 by texting REDCROSS to 90999.http://www.wkbw.com/home/Red-Cross-Responds-To-Disaster-In-Pacific-117824793.html Direct link here: RedCrossHere.

Update 3-13-11.. RC this note in SL today saying Japan is not specifically asking for finances as they have those resources, but rather help and goods (of course finances can buy items they need and below lists some places support can be sent directly to besides the international Red Cross)...

"Good Afternoon Everyone,
I'm sure that we have all seen via TV and internet, the mass devastation caused up north by the earthquake and tsunami on Friday. If you would like to know how to help in the relief efforts, please see the details below. This is all voluntary and if you would like to contribute, I am sure anything you can would be greatly appreciated by those effected.

You can send items to these addresses through your local neighborhood Japanese Post Office - they really need -
1. Food (instant foods, dietary supplements, baby foods);
2. Warm blankets (That north part of Japan is still really cold now);
3. Clothing;
4. Baby clothes, and DIAPERS!!!!

Mardi Gras Kicks Off The Season Even in SL! Also-Happy Birthday Barbie!

Mardi Gras
I hit several Mardi Gras parties last night in SL!

Per Wikipedia: "The terms "Mardi Gras" (pronounced /ˈmɑrdiɡrɑː/), "Mardi Gras season", and "Carnival season",in English, refer to events of the Carnival celebrations, beginning on or after Epiphany and culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday" (in ethnic English tradition, Shrove Tuesday), referring to the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season, which begins on Ash Wednesday. .... Popular practices include wearing masks and costumes, overturning social conventions, dancing, sports competitions, parades, etc. Similar expressions to Mardi Gras appear in other European languages sharing the Christian tradition. In English, the day is called Shrove Tuesday, associated with the religious requirement for confession before Lent begins." New Orleans, Louisiana, in the United States is notorius for ongoing Mardi Gras, as well as other specific areas around the world at this time or other times of the year.

Today, March 9th is Ash Wednesday. St. Patrick's Day is March 17, followed by the first day of spring March 20, then we have Palm Sunday April 17, Good Friday, April 22, and Easter April 24th. Second Life is sure to have, as usual, the annual wonderful celebrations, costumes, decorations, special events and sims associated with the upcoming spring holidays. I look forward to the many East egg hunts, and one of my favorite Christian sims, Eternal Creations, usually offers some wonderful events for the Christian holiday celebrations.

As a side note that is somewhat SL related Barbie Doll was introduced on this day in 1959(my av is kind of like Barbie to me) Happy Birthday Barbie! I usually have this picture on my SL RL photo section and it never ceases to amaze me that occasionally someone will ask if that is really a picture of me! Haha.. anyway.. have a good day! Happy Birthday Barbie! Introduced this day in 1959

We are at it again!

Split Screen Hosts an Exhibit by Misprint Thursday, "Digital Glove"

splitscreen.jpeg
"SPLIT SCREEN INSTALLATION SPACE: MISPRINT THURSDAY'S "DIGITAL GLOVE" SHOWING IN MARCH

Misprint Thursday's extraordinary piece "Digital Glove," which exploits the capabilities of video in SL and won *four* awards during the University of Western Australia's art contest in February, will be at Split Screen's sky platform this month. Be sure to turn on video when you arrive, or you'll miss the entire thing!"

Split Screen typically hosts two artists who spend about a month preparing their large immersive/environmental artwork then show for a month. There are two artists working on this now, but in the interim Split Screen is fortunate to host "Digital Glove" a must see.. Check it out here: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Beleza/71/202/1501 or direct link here: SplitMisprintHere.

I stopped in this afternoon for a peek at "Digital Glove" and Betty Tureaud, Obvious Schism, and Divi were kinda hanging out while others were down below at Split Screen. I had my media going, so immediately saw the show and hopped on one of the "bikes" to watch the video and listen to the music sung by Misprint. I attached the provided hud and clicked for her additional information notecard and video.

Misprint's card provides information which in part includes the following information: "www.misprintthursday.com

"Digital Glove is a video art installation with an original video and collaborative song with lyrics and vocals by Misprint Thursday. Lyrics

St. Patrick's Day Town: A Shop And Play Area by Laura Liberty

Laura Liberty is well known for her adorable holiday themed builds that not only provide a great deal of interactive fun with things to play on and do, but house quaint little shops filled with seasonal products to purchase that are usually pretty unique and appeal to me. I visited her latest, St. Patrick's Day Town, and played on all the toys before buying myself a cute little outfit for the holiday. The area has a contest and the person who guesses the closest to the number of glowing coins in an pile wins a large L cash award. Laura told me in a few days she will add some additional large things to play on, but I couldn't wait and went ahead and filmed some of the place. My new computer and I have been having it out, so my resolution issue is still not resolved making me just not take the time I should if I am showcasing someone's wares, but it is what it is at 2am. This is a place everyone should visit if not to buy things, then to just hang out and play and pick up some of the freebies including a large variety of free St. Patrick's Day hats, etc. Be sure to check it all out here: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Elizabeth%20Town/151/131/1088 or direct link here: St.Pat'sHere.

UWA, The Other World

UWA Other World

I jumped into SL this morning for just a moment and had a note card about UWA's "The Other World" that sounded intriguing, so I ran over, glanced around and took a couple of quick photos with full intent of going back after work tonight for a nice long explore. What I did see was very surreal. My photo is raw, and so you can see the place is very blue with a LOT of unusual looking creatures. I didn't have time to read any notes or even look around, but today over my lunch I ran across the info. on the UWA site (http://uwainsl.blogspot.com/ direct link here:
UWAHere. which reads as follows:

"The 3rd installment of the UWA FULL SIM ART series sees the amazing 'Other World', created by the triple French treat of Cherry Manga, Anley Piers and Elfe Imako!
It is best left to be described in their words:
Mankind created the machine and always wanted to improve it, adding abilities, and even gave the machine artificial intelligence.

The machine had its own evolution, once it gained artificial intelligence it grew to possess artificial consciousness then the collective consciousness. The machine grew up through many aeons, learned from its own mistakes.

The machine is now in the other world, all parts of the machine are closely bounded, if a little robot cuts itself, the sadness is shared by the entire machine. The machine lives in harmony in the environment it is set, all energy needs are calculated to keep and preserve the world, nothing is taken freely from nature, the machine looks after nature, conscious that its energy depends on the global health of its natural environment.

This way of living is what humankind could call utopia or eden.

This exhibition shows the irony of machine beings, supposed to be heartless and without emotional feelings able to live in respect of its environment, and in harmony with all members of its community ... and the sad conclusion that human beings in 2011 are still fighting for power, for money, for religion, not able to think of the future of our children, continuously draining all that earth can give.

The SIM is open to all till the 31st of March 2011. Keep your eyes peeled for the party they will throw soon though!"

"O2": A SL Machinima in the Go Green International Film Competition

The Story of "O2"
